News Release
Farm Women’s Symposium Celebrating 25 Years

Farm Women’s Symposium will return to its roots in Traverse City, Michigan for the 25th anniversary program on March 9-11, 2016.  This event is an excellent opportunity to learn, develop valuable networks, renew friendships, and get motivated for another year in farming.

After a welcome to the area, Jolene Brown will first talk about how a positive sense of humor can impact farm family relationships, in “Who’s Hiding the Humor?”  Her afternoon presentation is called “Stop the Fighting on the Way to the Funeral Home.” She will explain that it is time we learn from others’ mistakes and work for positive results.  Marv Pichla will discuss life principles learned from farming; Dr. Rob Sirrine will explain about hops production in MI; and Marji Guyler-Alaniz, founder of “FarmHer”, will share what led her to create her web site/blog. Her mission is to document women in agriculture through photography.

Thursday’s bus trip is still tentative but plans are to tour St. Ambrose Cellars, Sleeping Bear Farms, Left Foot Harley Urban Winery, Higher Grounds Coffee Co., and Gillison’s Variety Fabrication, Inc.

After the bus trip, a reception and banquet celebrating 25 years of FWS is planned, followed by entertainment.

On Friday, Kim Bremmer, a vocal champion of agriculture, will advocate “Sharing your Front Row Seat to Farming.”  Elizabeth Lautner, DVM and director of a USDA laboratory in Ames, Iowa, will talk about “Animal Health in the Country,” sharing stories about her job. Beverly Berens from MI AgrAbility will discuss “Farming with a Disability.”

Whether you are active in farming or agri-business, or just want to know more about women in agriculture, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity.  While registration is open to everyone; a limited number of scholarships are available for Michigan Corn Grower members and for GreenStone Farm Credit Services members (GFCS will be commemorating 100 years of support in 2016 for rural communities and agriculture, and is again offering $150 scholarships).  For questions about scholarships or the Farm Women’s Symposium, contact Agnes Talaski at (989) 670-7811 or Sheryl Oswalt at (269) 330-2529.
